As an Engineering Manager at Stripe, you will operate with full autonomy across a complex, high-impact area of our product or infrastructure. Your scope extends beyond a single team - you lead or strongly influence multiple engineering teams, execute on parallel high-priority workstreams, and develop senior engineering talent. You are expected to set direction, align stakeholders, make decisions that stick, and deliver results without needing to be directed. This is the career level for Engineering Managers at Stripe: the fully realized, autonomous EM who drives lasting organizational impact.

What it asks for · 6

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience with 10+ years of software development experience
  • 4+ years of engineering management experience with a demonstrated, autonomous track record of impact as an EM — you deliver consistently without close direction
  • Experience leading high-complexity engineering teams executing in parallel on multiple difficult, high-impact workstreams simultaneously
  • Proven ability to influence and align cross-functional stakeholders without direct authority, communicating a clear direction that others follow
  • Meaningful recruiting experience, including a track record of attracting and developing senior engineering talent
  • Technical depth sufficient to guide architecture decisions and hold your team's work to a high standard across both product quality and engineering craft

Also a plus

  • Experience managing a team which operates a critical service with demanding reliability and latency requirements.
  • API design depth, with demonstrated ability to hold a high bar on API quality for a team whose primary product is an API.

What the job covers

  • Lead with Scope and Autonomy: Drive impact across multiple teams or a significant product area, fully independently. Translate organizational goals into a concrete execution plan, manage complex parallel workstreams, and hold yourself and your team(s) accountable for delivering meaningful results at a consistently high bar.
  • Define Strategy and Roadmap: Develop the vision, strategy, and goals for your area without waiting to be told what to do. Anticipate user needs, technical challenges, and business priorities — and make decisions that hold up over time. Communicate your plan clearly and persuasively to both your team and senior leadership, and connect your team's work to Stripe's broader mission.
  • Develop Senior Talent: Invest meaningfully in the growth of senior engineers and emerging leaders on your team. Provide direct coaching, create meaningful stretch opportunities, and give candid feedback that elevates both individual and collective performance. Managers, senior ICs, and high-potential engineers grow under your leadership.
  • Drive Cross-Functional Alignment: Build trusted, productive working relationships with stakeholders across Product, Design, and adjacent engineering teams. You resolve ambiguity at the intersections, align teams around shared priorities, and ensure your organization's work is understood and valued across Stripe.
  • Hire and Scale the Team: Take a strategic and proactive approach to recruiting. You attract senior engineering talent, set a high hiring bar, and ensure every hire improves your team and Stripe as a whole. You have a demonstrated track record of building diverse, high-performing teams.
  • Operate with Rigor: Instill a culture of high standards, ownership, and operational excellence across your organization. Proactively identify systemic issues, drive process improvements, and model the behaviors you want to see — including quality, urgency, and a sense of craft.

How this page was made

An automated read of a public job posting, fetched September 9, 2026 and last changed by Stripe on September 9, 2026. Every list above is pulled from the posting’s own sentences — nothing rewritten, nothing added, no judgment about the role or the company. Counts and seniority are read off the text by rule, so they can be wrong where the posting is unusual. The original is the only thing that binds.
